Intensive Academic English

Intensive Academic English is available to all students who are older than seventeen years of age. There are four separate application processes for students depending on visa type:

  • All full-time students including F -1 outside the U.S. (called "Initial")
  • Full-time U.S. permanent residents/citizens
  • Full-time transfer F-1 students already in the U.S. (called "Transfer")
  • Part-time students (U.S. permanent residents/citizens, F-2 Visa, B Visa, J Visa, or other)

* Bank Statement and Statement of Willingness not required.

Full-time 鈥淚nitial鈥 Student Applications: F-1 Students (Outside the U.S.)

  • Complete the Intensive Academic English Application for full-time F-1 students. 
  • Provide a copy of your passport.
  • If you are bringing a child or a spouse:
  • Provide proof of funding. Please review the Cost Guide.
  • An official bank statement, bank letter, or if sponsored by your government a scholarship (financial guarantee) letter.
  • If someone else is responsible for payment of your tuition and/or housing, complete Statement of Willingness (PDF).
  • If you are living with a family member or friend in the U.S. who provide free housing and food, also complete a Room and Board Statement of Willingness (PDF).
  • For International Students: Pay fees and tuition via .

  • Fall: July 15
  • Spring: December 15
  • Summer: April 15 

Full-time "Transfer" Student Applications: F-1 Students (Inside the U.S.)

  • Complete the Intensive Academic English Application for full-time F-1 students.  Please include your U.S. address and foreign address on the application.
  • Provide immigration documents:
  • Copy of your passport
  • Copy of your current I-20
  • Copy of your I-94
  • Copy of your visa 
  • Provide proof of funding. Please review the Cost Guide.
  • An official bank statement, bank letter, or if sponsored by your government a scholarship (financial guarantee) letter.
  • If someone else is responsible for payment of your tuition and/or housing, complete Statement of Willingness (PDF).
  • If you are living with a family member or friend in the U.S. who provide free housing and food, also complete a Room and Board Statement of Willingness (PDF).

Note about "Conditional" and "Provisional" Admission

Towson University offers "Conditional Admission" to undergraduate students requiring English language training before studying for a Bachelor's degree, and "Provisional Admission" to graduate students requiring English language training before studying for a Master's or Doctoral degree. Students who select these programs may be admitted to their academic degree program without standardized English Proficiency test scores.

  • Undergraduate Students - "Conditional" students must complete level 5 of the Intensive Academic English program or APTU 2 of the Academic Pathway to Towson University before matriculating to their undergraduate programs.
  • Graduate Students - "Provisional" students must complete level 6 before matriculating to their graduate programs.  

Part-time Student Applications: F-2, B-1 / B-2, J, Other (U.S. Permanent Resident / Citizen, etc.)

Applications and materials should be submitted electronically to elc@towson.edu or mailed to Towson University English Language Center, 8000 York Rd. Towson, MD 21252 USA.

Paying fees and tuition by check made out to 鈥淭owson University鈥 will not be available until the university campus fully reopens in the Fall 2021 semester. At that time, you can also mail your check to Towson ELC or bring it into our office. We only accept credit card payments in person. Students abroad can also pay fees and tuition by wire transfer.  See how to pay tuition and fees below.
